Having done a few works before for the Ice Hockey industry in Malaysia, I got the chance to work with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) this year, which was quite a big thing.
I was tasked to design TWO logos for the Challenge Cup of Asia 2018 tournament, one for the men’s division and another for the women’s. The challenge was:
- To design a logo that represents Malaysia, within the IIHF official logo guidelines and parameters.
It means that I would have to follow certain guidelines and my logos are subject to IIHF’s approval. It definitely wasn’t one of the easiest things to do as I always preferred to start working on a logo from scratch. However, the thought of representing Malaysia in not one, but two logos in the IIHF official handbook kept me motivated.
For the Malaysian representation, I used local motifs in the form of batik and songket designs.
Batik for the women, which contains motifs of the hibiscus flower, and various foliage associated with our tropical country. The songket design for the men was a little tougher seeing how various patterns may or may not work as well. Color combination was quite a challenge as well. In the end, after a few rounds of suggestions and tweaks, we finally have our logos, APPROVED by IIHF!
